Treatment of Your Condition

Dr. Robert Kohn knows that the proper diagnosis leads to the proper treatment. He assesses your symptoms using his Biological-Psychological-Social framework, explained in Our Approach to Healing.

With the information gathered from your evaluation forms, tests and clinical exam, Dr. Kohn prepares an individual Treatment Plan using a variety of the following Treatment tools.

Traditional Medication

Prescription medication is used to treat conditions or symptoms of impairment. This approach relies on the wisdom and experience of the doctor. Guidelines for taking each medication are based on the current standard of care.

Neurofeedback Therapy

Neurofeedback Therapy is quite successful in helping patients retrain specific brain wave patterns. It gives the patient real time feedback on brain wave activity that is measured by sensors placed on the scalp and ears. This feedback is in the form of a video display.

The theory behind Neurofeedback Therapy is to increase the brain wave frequency over an area of localized brain wave slowing (as seen in patients with a head injury or depression) or to decrease the brain wave frequency over an area of localized brain wave increase (as seen in patients with anxiety or ADHD/ADD).

During therapy, when brain wave patterns change in the direction that is desired by the trainer, a positive "reward" feedback is given to the patient.  If the brain wave patterns change in the opposite direction from what is intended the positive feedback is withheld. This positive reward can be something as simple as listening to music or watching a movie on the Neurofeedback screen. The music or movie will play as long as the patient’s brain activity is in the direction intended, if the brain activity changes direction the movie will slow or even stop altogether.

Therapy/Counseling

Therapy and Counseling services are provided to help and support the patient on the path to healing and wellness. The counselor can provide cognitive behavioral therapy to reframe misaligned thinking and improve dysfunctional symptoms. They can also evaluate the patient for learning disorders as well as developmental disorders.

Our Affiliated Professionals, Richard Parsons, M.S.Ed. Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and Carrie Jura, MSW Licensed Clinical Social Worker, provide counseling services in our office.

Neurotransmitter Replacement Therapy

This treatment is based on the assumption that symptoms of mood disorders, obesity and memory decline (just to name a few) may result from depletion of the building blocks of the brain chemicals referred to as "neurotransmitters." This therapy uses supplementation of amino acids and vitamins, either with or without prescription medicine, to re-balance the depleted concentration of brain building blocks. Vision Therapy

Vision Therapy is performed under a trained optometrist that has expertise in the connection between visual processing and the brain. These vision problems are due to an imbalance in both eyes sending correct information to the brain. Dr. Kohn will often refer patients who have difficulties with reading or attention processing, that is not due to visual acuity, for vision therapy. This is not a treatment to determine if a patient needs eye glasses, but is a form of therapy to correct an imbalance. Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy

This approach to healing uses a non-pharmacological, non-invasive set of specific techniques to improve mental and bodily function based on the principles of Osteopathic Medicine. This approach uses manual medicine to adjust the connective tissue and its attachments with the neuro-musculosketal system.
