Introduction
A sleep disorder refers to a condition in which falling asleep, maintaining sleep or maintaining wakefulness is affected.
There are many separate conditions under the diagnosis of Sleep Disorders. Usually a complete history and overnight sleep study
confirms this condition.
Examples of Sleep Disorders include:
Obstructive Sleep Apnea- characterized by variable pauses in breathing, very loud snoring and excessive daytime fatigue.
Narcolepsy- a disorder of extreme daytime sleepiness with a very rapid onset of dreaming with sleep, sleep paralysis with inability to move and
loss of muscle tone with exposure to intense emotion.
Restless Leg Syndrome- an uncomfortable feeling of restless feeling in the legs that causes a person to move them excessively during sleep.
Sleep is disrupted and daytime fatigue is common.
REM Sleep Disorder- an interruption of dreaming during sleep that results in acting out one's dreams as the muscles are not paralyzed.
An individual may get out of bed, go to the kitchen and mistakenly ingest household cleaning supplies believing them to be food or
become aggressive to his or her partner due to acting out in a dream.
