Asperger Syndrome

What is Asperger Syndrome?

This childhood onset condition (though it is often not diagnosed until adolescence or early adulthood ) resembles the impairments in social skill development and restricted level of interest of autism. However, it differs significantly in that there is usually no delay in language, cognitive development or age appropriate self help skills.

How can Dr. Kohn help you?

Dr. Kohn uses a variety of evaluation forms and both Assessment and Treatment Tools in his Practice. He uses a Holistic view of the patient and the problem. Dr. Kohn uses a Biological-Psychological-Social framework to assess your symptoms because he knows that the proper diagnosis leads to proper treatment.

Attention processing challenges are not the same as ADHD, but may respond to stimulant medication. Anxiety from obsessive compulsive patterns may well be greatly reduced with SSRI or atypical antipsychotic class of medication. School age children require accommodations for these impairments and an Individual Education Plan recognizes the importance of developing one.

Treatment follows from evaluation of emotional, cognitive and behavioral symptoms. Assessment tools may be used. Neurofeedback may be an option, and Event Related Potentials may be used.

More Information About Asperger Syndrome

These children often appear like " little professors" with their dense knowledge of detail on arcane subjects such as mating habits of voles in North America, or engine speeds and optimal angles of roller coaster design, or computer code for certain action video games, as examples. They may intensely worry as they obsess on detail after detail to the extent that such preoccupation prevents active participation in social function.

A common behavioral observation is the marked impairment in eye-to-eye gaze, facial expression, body posture and gestures in social interactions. They often fail to develop peer relationships in their childhood.
