The Traditional vs. Non-Traditional Approach to Treat Neurological and Psychiatric Conditions
In American medicine today, most symptoms are treated by specialists who focus their
skills and attention on one area of expertise; the specialist usually does not treat the patient as a "whole functioning being."
The Traditional Approach
This approach to illness or disease is based on the perspective that symptoms signal a specific problem separate from the entire well being of
the individual. Treatment by one or many doctors is directed with medicine to reduce the distress the symptoms cause.
The overall functioning of each person is viewed as improved based on treating the symptom, not the entire system that the person lives in.
In Psychiatry, for example, the doctor prescribes the medication and the therapist listens while directing therapy.
In Neurology, this may appear as the doctor managing the medicine and tests for the symptoms of the nervous system,
and referring the patient to other specialists for other systems that are affected.
The Non-Traditional Approach
This is a broader, more open-ended approach to treat symptoms as an expression of a disruption of the natural forces
that balance the body as a whole unit.
Using the information gathered through the Bio-Psycho-Social Model, interventions are directed as follows:
Improve balance in the neuro-musculoskeletal system (Osteopathic Manipulation, Chiropractic, Naprapathic)
Mobilize signals in the tissues (Massage)
Assist muscles, nerves, and circulation with nutrition (Naturopathic) or energy flow (Acupuncture)
Use a combination of non-prescription supplements (Homeopathic, Herbal, Dietary Amino Acids, etc.)
with techniques from practitioners above
Energy medicine is a common thread that is considered a basic theme to all of these approaches
Dr. Kohn will develop a Treatment Plan that is appropriate for you. This may include
monitored prescription medications, Neurofeedback Therapy, supplements, and referral to alternative medicine specialists in Osteopathy, Acupuncture, etc.
